From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Saturday Night Livekicked off its latest show, riffing on both First LadyMelania Trump’sout-of-the-blueJeffrey Epstein messageand the so-far unsuccessfulpeace negotiationsbetween Iran and the U.S.

The show's cold open began with Ashley Padilla playing White House Press SecretaryKaroline Leavitt, who is preparing PresidentDonald Trump’sinfamous tweetthreatening to destroy the entire Iranian civilizationahead of the two-week ceasefire agreement.

After dismissing the press secretary, Trump — played once again by James Austin Johnson — makes a call to Tiger Woods as played by Kenan Thompson for a quick laugh about the golfer'srecent DUI scandal.

The “president” hangs up on Thompson’s Woods, after which the president's phone rings. The number isn't one he recognizes.

“Who’s this? I don’t recognize the number,” the faux Trump says.

Upon answering, he is greeted by Chloe Fineman's take on First LadyMelania Trump.

“You’re calling me? That’s not a good sign,” Johnson's Trump says.

Fineman's Melania explains that she wants to hold a seemingly unprompted press conference at the White House, strongly denying any connection between her andJeffrey Epstein.

“Uh, darling, I gotta admit, this sounds a little insane,” Johnson's Trump replies. "Who are you? Me?”

But Fineman's Melania continued, suggesting it might be good to distance herself not just from Epstein, but also the Gilgo Beach serial killer.
