Melania Trump is back in public life. What does she want to say?

First lady Melania Trumpbefuddled both critics and admirers over the timing of a news conference at the White House last week, where shedenied any involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, seemingly seeking to distance herself from the convicted sex offender.

"The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility and respect," a stone-faced Trump said, standing behind the lectern. The cable news networks – fromFoxtoCNN– held court over why she chose to address the press about Epstein on April 9, when the Iran war had largely bumped mentions of the late financier out of the news cycle.

Trump operates on her own time and has long opted for a public and personal life of her own choosing. But the wife ofDonald Trump, who often avoids the spotlight she might face by weighing in on her husband's policy decisions, has become increasingly involved in the presidency in recent months.

On Wednesday, April 15, Trump will attend a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill with members of the House Ways and Means Committee to trumpet a package of bills intended to advance her foster care initiative.

A first lady who has long broken from tradition now appears to be leaning into the time-honored approach for the role of a presidential spouse.

Trump had already been more present in her husband's second term of service than she was during her husband's second presidential campaign. She skipped major events in the 2024 race, but did appear at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

After her husband won back the presidency, she began appearing more frequently in public. She joined President Trump forPope Francis' funeral last spring, wearing a black veil that went viral, and helped helm the 2025White House Easter Egg Roll. She paid a pre-July 4 visit to aDC-area children's hospitalas he signed his "Big Beautiful Bill" during Independence Day festivities.

She traveled to Texas after devastating floods in the state. She joined her husband'sstate visit to see King Charles across the pondin the UK and hostedHalloweenat the White House. Reupping her first term focus on the well-being of children, she launched her "Fostering the Future Together" tech initiative and has advocated for foster kids.

Her second term appearances mark a significant shift for a first lady who ignited backlash for wearing a green Zara trench coat, with "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" written in white letters on the back, while visiting a Texas migrant children's shelter in 2018.

Since the release of her Amazon Prime Video documentary film, it seems that Melania Trump also wants to jump into the action. Brett Ratner's "Melania" followed the first lady in the 20 days leading up to her husbandDonald Trump's second presidential inauguration.

She again appeared at the White House Easter Egg roll, standing next to a human-size bunny mascot and reading a book to children. She arrived at her own White House technology summit with a humanoid robot and attended a Women's History Month celebration.

And at the press conference last week, she denied any relationship with Epstein or his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is now imprisoned in a federal Texas correctional facility.

"I am not Epstein's victim. Epstein did not introduce me to Donald Trump," Trump said. It remains unclear exactly why she chose to embrace the spotlight in recent months or why she chose to distance herself during a public press briefing.

One thing is for certain. Trump says she wants the lies to end.
