ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WSBT) —She survived Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse -- and on Thursday night, Jess Michaels spoke out.

Michaels said she was 22 years old when Jeffrey Epstein raped her in 1991.

Decades later, she's using her voice to remind other survivors that they are not alone.

St. Joseph’s Shadowland Ballroom was packed Thursday night as people gathered for a conversation about survival, healing and empowerment.

Michaels, a survivor of sexual assault by Jeffrey Epstein, said sharing her story can reach people who may still be carrying trauma in silence.

The fundraiser benefited Berrien County’s Caring Connection Empowerment Center, which supports survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The center is facing significant cuts in state funding while continuing to provide advocacy, resources and support during some of the most difficult moments in a survivor’s life.

"Trafficking and sexual abuse is a national story. And it's not a political story. It's about prevention. It's about survivors. And it's about making sure people understand. So we're hoping to fundraise enough money to keep the services running," said Robin McGinnis, Caring Connection CEO.

Michaels said while her experience became part of a national conversation, survivors are everywhere.

She said having local support systems in place can make all the difference for someone deciding whether — and when — to come forward.

Proceeds from the event will directly support Caring Connection Empowerment Center and its services for sexual-assault survivors in Berrien County.

Organizer's said they're hoping to raise $40,000.
